The effect of gold is not so easy to achieve on a wooden surface. First the plane, untreated wooden object is primed with a quick-drying oil varnish, and then polished with powdered aluminium. After being "silvered" in this way the objects are painted with refractory oil colours and are then laquered and dryed in ovens. The heat makes the varnish yellow, turning the "silver" into "gold", and softening the bright colours of the painted decoration with an even golden tone.
